Why did my cars head unit die?

the model of the head unit was Sony CDX-GT520. i hooke dit up but there was no power so i ran a power wire directly from the amp wire to the stereo but about 3 months after i onstalled it when i was listening to it and i pressed the cig. lighter it just died. any advice? how should i hook up the next one? any special fuses?
