Dog hates cats really hates cats?

we bought out dog from the pound and she is wonderful to our children she is cage trained and well mannered,,,,until she sees a cat!!!!! she will go crazy when she sees them..she acctually got ahold of a cat once and shook it like a rag doll..the cat did get away...how can i get her to play nice???
